CIC Chats

As an opportunity to connect in the virtual space as well as highlight new opportunities with the fall 2020 semester's Convergence Innovation Competition, we are introducing the CIC Chats series.

Chat 1: Leveraging the Convergence Innovation Competition

Date: September 24, 2020

Time: 3:30-4:30 p.m.

Faculty and students, please join us to explore how your current student research and course projects can leverage the Convergence Innovation Competition (CIC) to improve their impact and visibility. The CIC is dedicated to helping students create and showcase innovative and viable products with the support of campus and industry resources. Winning entries include a viable prototype which addresses an existing need in one of the competition’s convergence areas. The fall 2020 competition introduces convergence areas covering a wide range of global and social issues.

During this Thursday Think Tank, we will:

  • Introduce the new convergence areas
  • Exploring the alignment and intersections of current course topics and research initiatives with the convergence areas
  • Brainstorm problems worth solving taken from current events (i.e. COVID-19, systemic racism, voting and civic participation, etc.)
  • Highlight the ways faculty can encourage student participation based on class projects, including different deliverable timelines

Chat 2: Planning Your CIC Submission

Date: October 8, 2020

Time: 11 a.m. - 12 p.m.

Our second CIC chat will create opportunities for students to meet and connect with other CIC participants as well as introduce the new convergence areas. We will give space for teams to ask questions to the planning team and troubleshoot opportunities for additional success.

During this CIC Chat, we will focus on:

  • Reviewing the new convergence areas
  • Meeting potential teammates for a project
  • Pitch interesting problems a CIC project could solve

Chat 3: Adapting Existing Projects for CIC Entry

Date: October 21, 2020

Time: 7-8 p.m.

Our final CIC chat for the fall 2020 semester will tackle best practices for turning an existing project from a class or personal interest into a successful CIC entry.

During this CIC Chat, we will focus on:

  • Reviewing the new convergence areas
  • Exploring how your existing solutions can be adapted to address needs beyond their original purpose
  • Play Stump the Chumps: see if you can bring us an existing project that we can't help you adapt for the CIC
